 Trust your senses
Does the facility smell clean? Is the noise level at a comfortable level for your loved one?
Observe
Do the residents and staff interact with one another? Do the employees seem to enjoy their work environment?
Use your imagination
Can you picture your loved one in that environment? Would this be a place that you and your family would enjoy visiting.
Get the facts
Every licensed community is visited annually. Ask to see the latest state licensing inspection survey.
What's for dinner?
Plan your visit around a meal time and make an appointment to include a meal with your tour. Also take a look at the menu. Do they offer alternatives if your loved one does not or cannot eat what is being offered?
My loved one is very ACTIVE
Ask to see the activity calendar of the community and have them tell you about some of their recent activities. Do they also offer community outings (shopping, movies, meals, etc.)?
Read the fine lines
Take a look at the move-in agreement and keep the future in mind. Allocate time in your schedule to go over the agreement well. As your loved one's level of care may need to increase, will this community still fit into your budget?
Safety first
Look at the room where your loved one may be staying. Are the grab bars accessible? Will it be difficult to get to and use the bathroom? Is there an emergency call light by the bed?
Talk, Talk, Talk
Speak with some families who have their loved one in the community. Be sure to speak with more than one family to get a broader sense of opinions. Ask for references.
I LOVE my SENIOR
Trust your instincts. Was the tour a comfortable one? Would you feel good about having them call that community home? Can this be a long term home?
